What is Wainscoting?

The half-wall you did not know had an official name. Wainscoting is wooden paneling to line the lower part of a wall. A traditional wainscot referenced boards of large, slow-grown oak. Wainscoting is the process of using those boards to make wall paneling. The name stuck around even though different materials can be used, such as reclaimed wood panels.

Wainscoting was a builder’s choice in the 18th century because it made the wall more durable while helping insulate the room. Today it is the interior designer’s choice and often a great way to add designs and patterns to a room. It is commonly paired with bright paint above it or colorful wallpaper with the bottom half of the wall paneled.

Where to Wainscot with Reclaimed Wood?

While wainscoting is not normally done with reclaimed wood, we can think of a few places where it would look great in the home. Using reclaimed wood on the bottom half of the walls in a child’s bedroom is a thoughtful choice. Reclaimed wood panels can be both visually appealing with neutral tones as well as physically appealing improving air quality.

Having wainscoting in the dining room makes a lot of sense. Most wainscoting is no higher than waist level which creates an eye-level design when seated and an overall design when entering the room. Reclaimed wood panel wainscoting in a dining room can look brilliant. Adding a solid wood table and tan or burgundy paint above the panels creates a cohesive look with reclaimed wood being the focal point.

You may already have a short wall in your home that can be covered. Under a bar area, on the outside of a kitchen is a great accent area for reclaimed wood. A pony wall that separates a large open area or a balcony wall are also ideal places to have a bottom accent wall covering. With this reclaimed wood half wall paneling, pair it with intricate wooden chairs or lounge furniture to complete the look.
